Diego is a 5 year old boy who has been recently diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) as of 12/12/15. According to the National Cancer Institute, AML is an aggressive form of leukemia that without treatment can only get worse.
He comes from a loving home including his mother, father, and 2 1/2 year old sister. Diego and his sister go to the same preschool in Concord, CA, he's in kindergarten. All of his friends and us teachers miss him very much. Last week we made him a bouquet of all our hands with our names and his teacher brought it to him during a visit.
Due to Diego's serious illness, he will be staying at the Children's Hospital in Oakland, for at least the next 6 months where he will be undergoing extensive ongoing treatment. Even though he will have few visits home, it is still uncertain if or when he will return. His friends and family are doing their best to help him feel connected. Because of all the time he will be there, his dad has taken an unpaid leave from work to stay with him and keep him company. His mom will still be working as much as she can. They do want to keep Alondra(sister) in school as well to make sure she still has consistency and a sense of a normalized routine so she doesn't become even more affected by all the change.
We are trying to raise money to help his parents pay for all of his medical bills as well as paying for his sister's school tuition. Their insurance won;t be able to cover all of the bills unfortunately, so we are trying to raise as much as possible, even though we do have a set amount we would like to raise, as much as we can gain will help, and there's not too much or too little for us to make. One of our teachers has offered to pay for all of Alondra's diapers and wipes to take something off their back. We have set up a dinner schedule at the school, so parents can sign up to have dinner delivered to the hospital for them. We have also started setting up other fundraisers around the school.
This is something that means so much to us here at school and to all of our families here, we appreciate everything so much and are so thankful for all the help we recieve.
