Sarah Mwalengu, a teacher from Kenya, lives close to Nairobi with her three children: Bryson (7), Flroah (5), and Bonaventure (2).
She now wishes to pursue a master’s degree in Environmental Science at Kenyatta University. Her motivation is both economic—to secure better-paying opportunities in the Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) field and provide for her children—and ideological—to contribute to a restorative economy aligned with planetary boundaries.
Sarah’s inspiration comes from two important figures:
- Wangarĩ Maathai, the first African woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize, known for her reforestation efforts in Africa.
- Hannigtone Mwalengu, Sarah’s late husband, who worked in EHS for a renewable energy company.
Over the past two years, Sarah has become a close friend to us, Anny and Leo. In celebrating our wedding, we wish to dedicate our joy to raising funds in support of her studies.
Our Goals
- Direct Support: Cover Sarah’s full tuition fees of approximately 165,500 KES (1,091.64 EUR as of September 13, 2025). We will confirm the exact amount with Sarah.
- Indirect Support: Any funds raised beyond tuition will help Sarah cover family and household needs—especially her children’s education—so she can fully focus on her studies. As an estimate, we set a fundraising target of 2,000 EUR in total, but this is not capped.
Why Your Contribution Matters
Sarah is determined to pursue this degree, even without our fundraiser. She has shared this dream with us independently of any support. This is crucial for us: we only wish to support causes where the person takes active ownership.
However, your contribution can make a decisive difference. As with any scholarship, it can relieve Sarah of financial and emotional strain, giving her the time and space to succeed in her studies and be present for her young children.
Project Phases
1. Raising (Q3 2025): Fundraiser open until September 30, 2025. If you need a later date to contribute, contact us directly.
2. Communicating (Q4 2025): We will inform Sarah about the fundraiser in a video call.
3. Transferring (Q4 2025):
A. If Sarah accepts, we will agree on the best transfer method and arrange payment personally.
B. If she does not accept, we will inform you and provide alternative education-focused donation options. In this case, we will run a poll to allocate the funds based on your votes.
4. Reporting (2026 - 2027 | Q4 2025):
A. If Sarah accepts:
A.1. We plan to visit Kenya in 2026 at her invitation, including a visit to Kenyatta University. We will share updates from this trip.
A.2. We will ask Sarah to provide half-yearly progress updates during her studies, which we will forward to you.
B. If Sarah does not accept, we will connect you with the reporting channels of the alternative recipients (e.g., NGO newsletters).
5. Closing (2027 - 2028 | Q4 2025):
A. We will inform you once Sarah completes—or if she leaves—her studies.
B. If funds are redirected, we will close the project immediately after ensuring reporting sources are shared.
