Rigo Asencio, who is loved by all, was diagnosed with stage 4 Squamous Cell Carcinoma on his tongue on November 21st, 2018 that has metastasized to the lymph nodes on his neck. Time is too slow for those who wait, too swift for those who fear, too long for those who grieve, too short for those who rejoice, but for those who love, time is the eternity. Love recognizes no barriers. It jumps hurdles, leaps fences, penetrates walls to arrive at its destination full of hope. We as a class love Rigo unconditionally, but I haven’t had the time to spend time with him as much as the other students did since the Fall of 2017. I transferred into the class on September 5th, 2018 of the fall semester. I can’t even begin to imagine how the others are feeling who have known him much longer than I have. Ever since I’ve enrolled in this class, nursing school has been much more fun and stress free. Whenever we need notes, help in class and need anyone to talk to on a personal and emotional level, he is always there for us. Rigo is the type of person that always puts on a smile and makes the classroom filled with joy and laughter. Surrounding ourselves around him always lifted our spirits high. Broken crayon’s still color, and no matter how heart broken he may be feeling right now, he never gives up without a fight. This fight isn’t easy, but he’s not alone in this because he has all of us and others that are deeply engraved within his heart. Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass, it's about learning how to dance in the rain. All too often, we forget about the patient's emotional fight while they're physically fighting their diagnosis, but cancer is a disease of the body, mind, and soul. Cancer may be a part of Rigo, but it does not define him. Cancer cannot cripple Rigo’s love, shatter his hope, corrode his faith, destroy his peace, destroy his friendships, suppress his memories, silence his courage and invade his soul. Rigo has an appreciation, a sensitivity, and an understanding of life that fills him with compassion, gentleness, and a deep loving concern. Beautiful people like Rigo do not just happen overnight. His diagnosis comes with huge expenses that is not limited to diet, tests/procedures, consultants, medication, follow ups and etc. This is a shock to all of us, but we are asking with a heavy heart to donate whatever you have to this fund as soon as possible. You know, chance does favor the prepared mind, and the more you know about it the more you will be able to understand what’s going to happen to you. I don’t think anybody should leave the doctor’s office after an examination or after an interview with the doctor with questions still on their mind. We want Rigo to get all the help he can get, but it can only start from us and everyone else that surrounds him by making a single gesture that will impact his life forever in a positive and meaningful way.
