In 2020, against all odds, something truly special was born — Maldon Promenade Zoo became a permanent part of the iconic Promenade Park. It was the start of an incredible journey. A small zoo with a big heart, built on passion, resilience, and a dream to connect people of all ages with the amazing world of animals.

But the road hasn’t been easy...

A Story of Survival Against the Odds

• In our very first year, we faced the unimaginable — the COVID-19 pandemic forced us to close our gates just as we had opened them. With no visitors, no income, but animals still needing daily care, we fought through — determined not to let the dream die.

• Then in 2021, tragedy struck again when Jungle James, the heart and soul of our zoo, suffered a life-changing accident. A moment that shook not only our team but the entire community. But still — we carried on.

• As if that wasn’t enough, our worst nightmare became reality — a devastating fire at our private farm, a site that was home to many of our beloved animals and formed the vital behind-the-scenes backbone of the zoo.

The fire was utterly heartbreaking. We didn’t just lose buildings and equipment — we lost precious animals, cherished members of our zoo family, whose lives were tragically cut short in the blaze. Their loss is something we carry with us every day. ️

Yet even in the face of that overwhelming grief — we refused to give up. We picked ourselves up, rebuilt, and continued because the mission we started means everything. This zoo isn’t just a place — it’s a family, a community, and a safe space for animals and all people alike, especially the many SEN groups and individuals who find comfort, joy, and connection here.

As we stand here in 2025, proud but battle-scarred from the journey, it’s time to take the next step. The zoo desperately needs essential upgrades — not just to survive, but to thrive.

Exciting News for the Future...

We’re thrilled to share that we are already close to finalising plans with Maldon District Council to secure additional space for the zoo! This incredible opportunity will allow us to completely redesign and expand our farm area, creating better environments for the animals and even more engaging experiences for our visitors.

This new space will play a vital role in the upgrades we are planning — but we cannot do it without your help. With your support, we can transform this vision into a reality that benefits our animals, our visitors, and the local community for generations to come.
