Together Today

My name is Kay Linley and I have worked in the natural resource sector for approximately 15 years with more recent work for the Yukon First Nations in land and resources management. This experience helped me recognize the need for more capacity in this important area of work.

To support Yukoners to pursue further education in related studies, this platform intends to fundraise for a scholarship at Yukon College. The scholarship is named "Together Today" to remind us of the "Together Today for our Children Tomorrow" foundational document, which spear-headed the land claims process in the Yukon years ago: https://www.cyfn.ca/agreements/together-today-for-our-children-tomorrow/

The "Together Today" scholarship will be for students  registered in environmental studies, First Nations Governance and Public Administration, or Bachelor of Arts in Indigenous Governance. It is anticipated that this scholarship will be available for students by January 2019. All donations big and small are greatly appreciated and will help achieve my goal of raising $5000. In addition to this fundraising platform, I am also excited to share that a Yukon College partner organization called "Indspire" will match any funds that are awarded to Yukon First Nation citizens through this scholarship until 2022.

To inspire raising funds, I will be undertaking a 920km kayak trip starting from Atlin, B.C. and ending in Dawson City, YT. I will be paddling through the lake systems that connect with the Yukon River. I will be starting this trip August 13th and will provide updates on my progress as I go. My partner Jeremy will be paddling with me to Whitehorse and then I will be completing the trip to Dawson solo. Feel free to join me!

My inspiration for this journey was drawn from many avenues. One, a couple of excited, young explorers who crossed my path in Atlin as they backpacked for weeks in attempts to reach Telegraph Creek. Two, how water connects our entire region and connects our life journeys from the past, present and into the future. And three, more globally, the important journeys and pilgrimages people take all over our vast world. I hope to motivate others to embark on their own personal journeys, reconnect with the spirit of nature and rediscover a level of perseverance that connects us with each other and those who came before.
