Hello, my name is Sandy, and our eight year old daughter Savanah and I are asking for your support and donations to help us with my husband Shane's small cell lung cancer journey.
In February of 2024, Shane had his third diverticulitis attack, which he ended up in the hospital for. He needed some testing to see if diverticulitis surgery would be necessary. His tests revealed he would need surgery. At the end of March 2024, Shane underwent a colectomy with colostomy surgery; a foot and a half of his colon was taken out. His stay at the hospital was about a week due to complications. While in the hospital recovering from his colectomy, he underwent a low-dose lung test. A couple of weeks later, we got the results that the image had found a nodule of about 7 cm. At this point, we were sent to a pulmonologist who had him go for a PET scan a month after his lung test to see if the nodule had grown. Unfortunately, the nodule had grown to 9 cm, yet we still didn't know if the nodule could be cancerous. The pulmonologist had him undergo a couple of biopsies. He had some nodules taken out for further testing just to make sure they were cancerous or benign. After many other tests and waiting around for biopsy results and MRIs of his brain and the rest of his body, the news was confirmed at the beginning of May: Shane had small cell lung cancer.
After getting a second opinion, talking to different doctors, and doing our own research about our options, we decided to go with a lobectomy (a procedure where an entire lobe of the lung is removed) to be followed by many rounds of chemotherapy. On June 11, 2024, he went in for his lobectomy at Rush-Copley Hospital in Aurora. The surgery was about 4 hours. His recovery at the hospital was supposed to be one night, but due to many complications because his lung kept collapsing and leaking where the incision had to heal in order for him to go home, he ended up being in the hospital for about a week and a half. He was allowed to go home with a drainage tube, and after another week of him having a drainage tube at home, it was removed to start healing on its own. Weeks later, on July 11th, he underwent a small surgery to get his medical port so he could start his chemotherapy. On July 24th, he started his chemotherapy journey. We have been praying for his full recovery from small cell lung cancer.
We are asking for anyone who can kindly donate to help in supporting him in paying off his medical bills, medications, and so many other things that this cancer has involved.Shane has been out of work for the past 9 months and is continued to be off work until further notice. Needless to say, Shane is a wonderful man, a wonderful father, husband, son, brother, uncle, and grandfather, and we are all praying for his full recovery so he can start enjoying life again. Thank you to all those who have taken the time to read our story, and thank you for having Shane in your thoughts and in your prayers.
Love, the Stouts.
