Hi, my name is Sepideh, and I’m organizing this fundraiser for my friend and colleague, Ramona Orr.

Ramona has dedicated her life to bringing creativity and light into the lives of others. She’s been a high school theatre teacher for 27 years, and before that, she was an active member of Vancouver’s theatre community as an actor and director. Ramona has a way of making people feel seen, nurturing confidence in them, and sparking creativity in young people who never knew they had it. I witness this every day.

Nearly three years ago, Ramona was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. She underwent chemotherapy and radiation and was stable for about a year, until the cancer returned. She fought through 11 months of chemo-immunotherapy, but eventually, that treatment stopped working. It has been an up-and-down journey to say the least.

Now, the most recommended treatment option left is a pill called Lumakras. It’s shown promising results for some patients, but it’s newly approved in Canada and not covered by her health benefits. Clinical trials were explored, but for her particular mutation, the trials are only in phase 1, which is very high risk and would require her to travel to Toronto. Her oncologist has applied for compassionate use, which would cover half the cost, but Ramona is still left with a monthly expense of $6,680, up to $78,000 per year.

Despite everything, Ramona continues to teach part-time. Even while battling cancer, she shows up for her students, sharing her knowledge and connecting with them in meaningful ways.

Ramona wants to live as long as possible, and those of us who love her want that too. Every additional day means more laughter, more stories, and more moments of connection.
