Our lives changed forever five years ago when my wife, Marcy Maloy, was paralyzed with a spinal cord injury. Immediately following her injury, a group of neurosurgeons told us specifically that we should expect she would never walk again. For the first two years of her recovery, Marcy worked incredibly hard with the support of private nurses, physical therapists, and occupational therapists leading her rehabilitation. These essential services were not provided by our private medical insurance, and we had to cover the costs ourselves. Fortunately, an earlier GoFundMe campaign helped to defray part of those expenses. Today, thanks to her relentless spirit, Marcy can walk with a walker—but now more than ever, she needs ongoing physical therapy to sustain and build on her progress. Over the past five years, the high costs of Marcy’s medical care have signficantly reduced our finances, making it difficult to afford the therapy she needs.
