Together for Brooke

For 30 years, Brooke has lived a happy and healthy life surrounded by loving family and many friends… her life changed in 2020 in many ways when she was diagnosed with cervical cancer. Chemotherapy, radiation, brachytherapy and surgeries meant she was twice, cancer free!

While most of you may know the resilience and strength Brooke and her family showed over the last few years, unfortunately the battle is far from over.

Brooke has been diagnosed yet again, and this time with some heart breaking complications.

As she embarks on another difficult journey, I sincerely ask and thank you for any support you can offer her and her family through this difficult time with what’s to come.

Below I post Brooke’s most recent update of her cancer story.

Brooke Guyers, “I’ve tried to write the specific stuff in the simplest way that I can but it’s an overwhelming amount of information. My next step is a big leap; - I’m having major surgery (12-16 hours) on the 11th September - they’re taking part of the sciatic nerve, which controls the back side of my leg. I’ll need a splint to help keep my foot stable and I’ll lose a lot of feeling. I will walk with a permanent limp, won’t ever be able to run again or play netball BUT hoping with hard work I’ll be able to “run” around somewhat after the girls - they need to take some of the ureter (tube connecting the kidney to the bladder) I think they’re going to attempt to reattach it but I could potentially lose my left kidney.

If that’s the case and my kidney is fine I’ll ask to donate it because why not!

It’s growing close to the bowel so they’re potentially going to do a bowel resection. Because I’ve had radiation around this area there is a possibility that it won’t work and I’ll end up with a stoma bag. I will have a more in depth mri before surgery so they can map it all out so fingers crossed

Because it’s growing close to the pelvic wall there is a chance they won’t get clear margins so could potentially need more surgery to remove some of the bone - I’m also having my uterus removed.

Now here’s the really scary part.

This is already risky surgery, there’s so many components to it BUT because I’ve had so much radiation around the pelvis/abdomen area it makes it even riskier.

There is an increased chance I will haemorrhage and not make it home.

Unfortunately, this surgery is my only option.

If the surgery is successful, It’s a 3-4 week stay in hospital and then intense Physio therapy and rehab to learn how to walk again. Recovery is months.

But if anyone can do it, it’s me!
I think I’m ok.
I’m overwhelmed and scared with it all.

I’m worried about how Todd, my family and friends are all coping. I’m a little worried about finances as Todd will need to be my full time carer for a while. But you can’t put a price on health and my life so I know we will make it through this. I’m so incredibly grateful for my husband and all the love and support he’s shown me! Truely the luckiest woman alive. I’m truely grateful for all the love and support I’ve received from everyone that’s in my corner! You all mean the world to me!

I really like my surgeon and know that he will do everything in his power to give us the outcome we’re hoping for!

Now I’m just trying to enjoy life, spend quality time with my family and trying to pour all the love I possibly can into the girls to last them a lifetime, just in case ”
