Heart Surgery to Fix Todd's Ticker

A little history:

2 days after turning 39 yrs old in November 2018, Todd Baker went into cardiac arrest and coded twice. It was deemed as an unexplained cardiomyopathy with plans to continue tests down the road.

Todd was admitted and flown to Thunder Bay and then to Winnipeg for testing, resulting in no clear plan as to when continued testing would happen. However, a Implantable Cardio Defibrillator was inserted for secondary prevention and he was put on medications to help control the arrhythmia's.

Within a month, Todd had two events of his Implantable Cardio Defibrillator going off ‘inappropriately’. Surgery was scheduled to re-ablate, as his 1st ablation was in 2017 when a minor arrhythmia was found.

In April/June 2019, Todd had another event where he was shocked 6 times and was sent to Winnipeg. At this point Todd and Megan started to search for a second opinion.

In October 2019, Todd had recurring events for over a month and was again admitted overnight to be monitored. In frustration, Megan contacted the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

In February 2020, Todd and Megan traveled to Rochester, MN in hopes of finding answers to the cardiac arrest. Their hope was to help manage and prolong his life and protect their kids in case it is an inherited heart disease. This came with a hefty bill. Mayo ran multiple tests. Some tests noted improvements as well as the discovery of new findings. Today the situation is this: Todd's heart is essentially an electrical mess. However, Mayo has given Todd and Megan hope in performing a surgery to get Todd back to a 'new' normal.

Near the end of February, Todd received a call from the Mayo clinic that they would like to perform the surgery in 2 weeks’ time.

Today, Todd is 40, has 2 amazing boys, a loving wife who has been by his side every single step of the way and has a long life ahead of him. Medication is not a long-term solution as he is on a high dose and it isn’t working effectively.

The reason for choosing the Mayo Clinic in the United States: Todd has already had two less invasive surgeries on his heart for arrhythmia and both were unsuccessful. The doctors from the Mayo Clinic consulting on his case hand-picked an elite doctor to perform the surgery. Multiple surgeries on the heart can cause scarring which in turn damages your heart more; therefore, it is important he sees the best.

OHIP will not cover cost of procedures performed out of the country. To have Todd in our lives for many, many years to come does not have a dollar figure. The Baker family (Todd, Megan and the boys), have not had an ‘easy’ go, to say the least. They have the opportunity to see the best of the best to hopefully put the worst of it behind them at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. The cost is 100% out of pocket. Heart surgery is not cheap. We are asking you to please consider making a donation of any size to help alleviate some costs for Todd & Megan and their family. Todd is our friend and neighbor, and a valued and cherished member of the community. We know he and Megan will humbly appreciate this act of kindness and generosity.
