Todd Goudie Strong - ALS Journey

My name is Paula Doyle and my best friend Carie (Conrad’s daughter) is in need of help and support.  By now you have probably heard that Todd (Carie’s husband) was diagnosed with ALS in May 2021 at the age of 50 and this terrible disease has continued to progress extremely quickly in the past 7 months.

 

One of the many challenges that exists is getting the nursing care needed to make Todd comfortable and to keep him at home as long as possible at any expense because the alternative would be to put Todd in a long term care home and all these homes are currently experiencing lockdown and outbreaks.  With this on-going pandemic, the health care system is damaged and letting her down and Carie has been left acting as a full-time nurse (7/24) while tending to his needs, working from home implementing software as a profession, being a mother to her autistic 16 year old son and trying to be an emotionally supportive wife to her sick husband.  At this time, Todd  needs one on one care, as he has lost his strength, his mobility, uses a feeding tube and requires help for every normal daily function.

 

It breaks my heart to observe Carie, who will put everyone else before herself, attempting to meet the needs of Todd, all the while trying to manage and co-ordinate everything related to this.  She is now sleep deprived and running on fumes.

 

A lot of family and friends have asked, “How can we help?”

 

In addition to the $50K in renovating the house to accommodate for Todd’s accessibility needs, she is now faced with spending just as much (if not more) in trying to hire the nursing help that is required and that the existing health care system can’t provide.
