Todd Brown’s Brain Cancer Fund

Praying and believing in a miracle for Todd. Please read this note from his daughter Noel and share. This is a wonderful family that I’ve come to know over the years in South Pasadena. His wife , Jennifer DSouza-Brown has subbed in our district for years and his son Kristoff is an SPHS alum class of 2018. Noel was also a student at SPHS and is currently now at Cal Arts Duarte.

Dear all, my name is Noel. I am writing this while I wait, at City of Hope hospital, for the most important news to be delivered to me. I am a senior in high school, and I thought college decisions would be the most important, but this definitely is.

Three weeks ago, my Dad and I were having a conversation at the dinner table when I noticed I couldn’t understand some words he was saying.  He went to the doctor the next day, who told him to go to the ER. It was there that we learned my Dad had a tumor in his brain. My life changed at this moment.

I know how hard my Dad works.  He is the majority provider to our family.  He has taught 6 and 7 grade math for 17 years at South Pasadena Middle School. He has been a beloved football and basketball coach for over 7 years.  In this process, my dad has touched 100’s of students lives. At high school football games when I would cheer, my dad would be waiting to pick me up, and he would be surrounded by past and present students. They would all talk to him about how they miss his class and the welcoming classroom filled with sports memorabilia. Some just wanted to hear another joke or watch funny cat videos. I went to visit him a week after the diagnosis, his whole classroom had changed. With his slurred speech his students couldn’t understand his jokes, or talk with him about their weekends, or debate who really is the greatest basketball player of all time. With this tumor, he cannot make them laugh.

On the day of surgery, a couple weeks after the original diagnosis, the neurosurgeon brought us back to meet with him. He said the tumor that was deep inside my dad's brain had become “more aggressive.” What this meant was that it was too deep and only getting worse Instead of being able to remove 100% as planned, they could only removed 80% of it.  They will try to get the rest with chemo and radiation. However, he will be out of work for months...maybe the rest of the school year. On top of this he currently can’t move the right side of his body at all and slurs all of his words. He sadly will have to undergo lots of rehab and relearn how to talk.

In anticipation for what is to come, my brother has gotten 2 jobs and is looking for a third. He unfortunately had to withdraw from his freshman year of college. This is my reach to the community for support.  My dad has a specific diet he needs to follow and it gets very expensive. I know we have bills to pay and I want to help my mom in any way possible. I know my dad wants me to go to college and my brother to return, but we won’t be able to do it without him. He loves giving his life to others, please if you can, donate what you can. I understand not all have the money to donate, but even just a dollar will help.
