Toby's stroke recovery

Donation protected
I’m Philip Herbst, father-in-law of Toby Hinshaw. My wife Judy and I moved from Wilmington, NC a little over a year ago to be nearer to the family and help with the kids. We did not know nor expect that support would be needed to this degree…

As many of you know, Toby had a life threatening Stroke on September 14, 2022. He was home alone at the time when a blood clot formed in the right side of his brain. He was rushed into emergency surgery and thankfully survived, but is now left with partial paralysis on his left side, the recovery from which remains uncertain. He initially lost all movement in his left arm and leg, left side of his face and vision in his left eye. With intense in-patient rehabilitation, he has started to regain movement in his leg, and just yesterday was able to squeeze his hand for the first time since the event.

Toby is 37 years old and has two sons, Jack and Wyatt who are 3 ½ and 1½ respectively. Maggie, our daughter, is Toby’s wife and Jack’s and Wyatt’s mother. Toby and Maggie have a good marriage and love each other and their boys. He is known to his family, friends, church community, and coworkers as a loving and upstanding man, generous with hugs and words of endearment. Now that Jack is getting a bit older, Toby had just begun introducing him to his lifelong hobbies of hunting, fishing, and other sports. We hope he returns to these activities one day and is able to share them with his sons, but there is much work and recovery to do first.
Though Toby and Maggie have lots of support in the form of family and friends, they have a limited health insurance policy with a high deductible. The initial 5 week hospital stay and other medical bills are extensive- well over what is covered. There will be months of physical, occupational, and speech therapy required, which at best will only be partially covered by insurance and short term disability provided by his workplace. There is also the reality of severe emotional stress and depression caused by the loss of physical abilities and the further lack of being able to provide basic needs for himself and his family. Much more is needed than what his friends and families can provide.
Maggie, Toby, Jack, & Wyatt currently live in a 100+ year old farmhouse which is very small and has no central heat. They rely on a single wood stove in the kitchen that is difficult to start and maintain. This was definitely one of Toby’s major responsibilities during the winter months! The house is very old and in overall poor condition. Maggie and Toby were in the process of planning to build a new home on the property, which (at the very least) is now on hold. For now they will need to remain in this house and are looking into a split system HVAC along with other renovations and modifications to allow wheelchair access and other mobility needs like a walker, stability bars, etc going forward.
In order for Toby to have the best chance of a full recovery, we are reaching out to our network and beyond for financial help. With the healthcare system being what it is, one terrible moment of misfortune or illness can wreak catastrophic havoc on a family. This completely unexpected stroke has taken a lot away from Toby, Maggie, and their boys. They lived a happy but modest life with not a lot extra to spare. We pray that lack of money does not prevent Toby from getting all the care that he needs in order to return to his productive life.
