help tobin with top surgery!
hello! i'm tobin! i'm a 19 year old trans man.
i first knew i was a boy when i was 10 years old. it was confusing and scary, and i didn't know there was a term for it. i internalized it until 3-4 years later. although i've only actively identified as a man since i was 13-14, i've remembered struggling with dysphoria since i was 10.
it's held me back my entire life; i couldn't participate in school musicals, i couldn't do sports, and i've become somewhat agoraphobic because of it. i can't even go to a grocery store without suffering. for 5 years i've desperately tried different kinds of binders, different sizes, cuts, and brands, but it doesn't do enough for me. not only does it not do enough, but it feels like i'm being kept in a cage. it's suffocating, it restricts your movement, you can't exercise in it, you can't swim with it, can't sleep in it, and you can't wear it 24/7 without causing irreversible damage to your body. i want to be rid of the binders, and i want to finally be able to live my life.
top surgery is the removal of breast tissue and the reconstruction of the chest to flatten it, so that it resembles a male chest.
i've been approved for top surgery. the approval lasts for 2 years. fortunately, i've been approved for a clinic in canada that the government covers, but i still am required to pay for for two plane tickets to montreal, transportation services, my stay at the clinic, and meals for a few days for 2 people as you're required to take another person with you. my doctor has let me know that most people pay anywhere from $2500 to $4000 CAD for all of this. i'm aiming to raise $3000.
