Toast is our clinic kitty. He just celebrated his first birthday 2 weeks ago, and is an absolute stinker. He joined our staff a few months ago, and was instantly loved and adored by all of our staff and clients. Last Saturday (5/6/2023) he was attacked by a dog in the clinic while he was napping under the front desk. His radius and ulna on his right forelimb were both broken in multiple places, and he also broke his sternum. He was hospitalized, and his right leg was amputated. On Tuesday, Toast was still not improving the way we hoped he would, and he was transferred to a specialty hospital due to a suspicon of a TBI.
The neurologist evaluated him, and while he thinks it is definitely possible he has a mild TBI, his innapropriate mentation was more likely seconday to the trauma. He was transferred to a criticalist, who has been working on managing his HCT and protein levels. He has had two plasma transfusions and a whole blood transfusion, and things do look like they are turning around for him. As of this morning, his HCT and albumin are continuing to climb, and his blood pressure is a lot more stable. Sweet bud is back to being a stinker and trying to move around, and he even pulled his NG tube out last night. He is also eating enough that we were able to back down his tube feeding.
He will need to be hospitalized for several more days before transferring him to continued care at our hospital, so this fund is to help cover that time so we don't take him out of the speciality facility too early and un-do all the hard work that has been done. It made me set an amount, but honestly any little bit helps. I can't say how much the support of the veterinary community means to us during this time. Every single doctor that has worked with him has been amazing, and the support from the "For Veterinary Use Only" group has carried me through this very difficult week.
