Most of you have seen pictures of Tike on his many adventures gallivanting across the US, and many of you have had the opportunity to meet our precious fox puppy in person and witness his snuggles firsthand. On Wednesday night our wonderful little fox puppy was brutally attacked by a Pitbull in our yard.
It took 3 adults and several of the longest minutes of our lives to get Tike free. It was 7:45 pm and too dark outside to see the damage. We rushed Tike to the nearest E.R. vet 30 minutes away, not knowing where all the blood was coming from, or if Tike would make it. He screamed the whole way to the hospital. After 2 hours at the E.R. we were told that his chances of survival were slim. Even if we did choose to operate, their office couldn’t do the surgeries. Tike has large holes in his skin where the doctor could literally reach in and touch Tike’s spine. His stomach was also ripped open, and Tike’s intestines were poking out. The doctor just gave Tike pain meds and sent us on our way.
We then drove Tike to the next closest E.R. vet. This one was a specialty office an hour away. After 48 hours with this doctor, we were able to bring our little love home.
Tike still isn’t out of the woods yet. We have to take him back to the vet daily for at least the next week for checkups, bandage changes and he is taking a nice little cocktail of 10 pills a day that consists of antibiotics, pain meds and anti-anxiety meds. The hope is that he is done with surgery. If the skin surrounding the bites starts dying, he will need one more surgery. We will find out Tuesday (10/19) if that's necessary.
Our current vet bill is $7,338.
We are extremely lucky that our sweet boy survived. We love him so much. If you can help us with this huge, unexpected and extremely unfortunate bill we would be absolutely grateful. Thank you all for your support! We can’t wait until this nightmare is just a vague memory.
Update: Tike did need a third surgery on 10/19 to remove the dying skin. That surgery was $1,441. Tike didn't have enough skin left on his back for them to pull together like the vet did on his first two surgeries. This time they just had to leave it as an open wound and we have to go to the vet for daily bandage changes which is $64 a day.
