To everyone who has reached out with messages of love and support, thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
As many of you may already know, Toby and Ali's dad, Paul, suffered a fall 6 weeks ago. At first, he was experiencing what seemed to be headaches and was treated with antibiotics for what was thought to be an ear infection.
Everything changed suddenly when Paul suffered a seizure while at home with his youngest son, Josh. Josh acted incredibly bravely and called an ambulance. Paul was rushed to hospital, where we met him in the resuscitation department. Doctors discovered he had suffered a fractured spine and a bleed on the brain. We were told for a week that he was stable, the bleed was no longer a concern, his spine would not need any intervention & could mobilise as normal. We were discharge planning and preparing him to be home within days.
We had met him on the ward where we had beautiful moments of laugher, we said our goodbyes for the day. Plans for his care quickly turned into an emergency. Paul became unresponsive and was transferred by blue-light ambulance to a hospital specialised in Neurosurgery; Oxford Hospital for life-saving brain surgery. Tragically, despite the incredible efforts of the medical teams, the damage was too severe.
After the hardest conversations any family could ever face, we had to make the heartbreaking decision to let Paul go peacefully. It was an impossible decision, but one we knew was inevitable as he had made it clear that he would never want to be kept alive severely disabled.
This devastating loss comes after an already unimaginable few months for our family. Josh, Paul's youngest son, lost his mum to cancer just three months ago at only 48 years old. Before the family had even begun to process that grief, they also lost their uncle to brain cancer suddenly just two months ago. This is three deaths and three funerals within three months.
Now, after losing both of Josh’s parents in such a short space of time, Josh faces an uncertain future. His brothers, Toby and Ali, are stepping in to care for him and provide the love, stability and support he needs during this incredibly difficult time.
Alongside the overwhelming emotional heartbreak, the financial pressures are mounting. Toby and Ali have been travelling back and forth and staying in Airbnb accommodation as none of them live close to the hospital. They are now also facing funeral costs, legal expenses, and the many unexpected costs that come with taking on responsibility for Josh and rebuilding their lives.
The boys were reluctant for this fundraiser to be created, as asking for help has never come easily to them. However, so many people have asked how they can support the family, and this felt like the best way to do that.
If you are able to donate, no matter how small the amount, it would mean more than words can say. If you're unable to donate, simply sharing this page with others would be an enormous help.
Thank you for your kindness, generosity and for keeping our family in your thoughts during the most difficult time of our lives. Every message, donation and share reminds us that we are not facing this alone.
With love,
The family ❤️
