For our friend Yoshi

Donation protected
Recently, one of our dear friend—Yoshi—was assaulted by a stranger while making an UberEats delivery. This violent attack was unprovoked and senseless. Yoshi and his girlfriend, Thi Thanh Thuy Nguyen (Helen), are trying to move past this awful incident and navigate their next steps while Yoshi recovers from the injuries he sustained during the attack.

Unfortunately, as Uber does not have WCB for their workers, Yoshi and Thi Thanh Thuy Nguyen (Helen) are taking time away from work without income. With this in mind, we hope to raise some funds to help with any expenses that might occur during this time of need while Yoshi is recovering and unable to work and for any follow-up care/therapy/dental he will need in the future. All contributions will go directly to Yoshi and Thi Thanh Thuy Nguyen.

On Saturday, October 15th, Yoshi was dropping off a delivery order in Olympic Village and found a spot to park along the street. However, a woman was standing in this spot – using her body to “reserve” it for a family member. Yoshi explained to the woman that she had no right to block the parking spot and asked her politely to move so he could park his car; he also mentioned that he would only take 5 minutes, but she would argue that they needed this parking spot for her son. Parked a few cars ahead was a U-Haul truck and the man in it (who happens to be the woman’s husband) cursed at Yoshi, immediately telling him to “get the f*ck out of here,” and other curses as Yoshi was speaking with the woman. The woman eventually moved, but that only enraged the man, causing him to approach Yoshi’s passenger window as he continued yelling and cursing at him until his wife pulled him away from Yoshi's car window.

After parking and getting out of his car, he saw a young man standing nearby. Yoshi asked the young man if he was with the man and woman, which he indicated he was. Yoshi then told the young man that it wasn’t cool to yell and curse at him as he didn’t do anything wrong, but then the young man disclosed that the man was his dad and asked Yoshi if he had a problem with this situation. Yoshi replied that he did have an issue with the cursing, and that’s when the son punched Yoshi in the face (Yoshi was in the middle of a food delivery, he had a bag of food in one hand and a phone in the other, so he was defenseless).

After Yoshi was punched, the father and mother urged their son to run away, so he fled. The lady and her husband also left the scene soon after, leaving Yoshi by himself disoriented and helpless.
Meanwhile, Yoshi felt dizzy and noticed his right foot was in excruciating pain after the assault. Once he got his bearings, he tried to call for help using his phone, but he could not make any calls as the phone was broken from the assault. Thankfully, two women were nearby and called 911 for Yoshi as he was still in shock.

Yoshi was taken to the hospital for injuries, including a fractured jaw, bleeding from the mouth, and an injured foot. He had to undergo major reconstructive surgery, leaving him with plates and screws in his face and a permanent scar as his jaw was broken in two places - his left cheek was fractured, and his jaw was split in half down the middle. He is currently unable to walk without assistance, eat, and sleep and is constantly on medication to cope with the pain.

Nobody deserves to be attacked – especially over a parking spot. This incident has not only left Yoshi with physical injuries but also emotional trauma.

Helen and Yoshi are thoughtful, loving people who think of others before themselves. They are always there for their friends and family in need, ready to help whenever possible. Their love and compassion will be needed now more than ever as they deal with this terrible situation. As you can imagine, this is a stressful time, and we know they will need all the help they can get, so we are trying to raise as much money as possible to help relieve some of the stress and burden during this difficult time.

Any amount of donations will be greatly appreciated. If you are unable to donate, we ask that you please share this page to spread the word.
