Hi, my partner Chris noticed a lump on his neck in February 2025, he was sent to see ENT at west Suffolk hospital a week later where they told him 'you have something nasty going on in there' which they thought was thoroid cancer. They immediately gave him a biopsy by drawing fluid out his neck and they checked the lump by putting a camera down. The results came back and they still didn't know what was going on. The following week he had a CT scan with which everything looked ok. They then sent him for a MRI scan but still wasn't sure what was going on.
A week and a half later he was due to have another biopsy where this time they would go in through his mouth and take some samples away from the lump however over the days in the lead up to this procedure his breathing was getting really bad to the point the day before the procedure was going to take place we ended up in A and E as he couldn't breathe very well at all. They took him up to intensive care where he would stay until his planned biopsy the following morning, when they took him down to theatre the lump was a lot bigger than expected and was blocking the majority of his airway so they decided to remove most of the mass and to send it away for more testing. He came back from theatre and was put in an induced coma in which he stayed for 7 days. At this stage they still had no answers so was testing for literally everything under the sun. Still wasn't showing signs of cancer but always said they couldn't rule it out. So they then decided to do another biopsy through the neck again drawing fluid out with a needle. After a 10 day stay at west suffolk he was then sent
to Addenbrookes hospital in an ambulance where he stayed for a further 2 days. He was then discharged still with no answers. Then 3 days after
he was discharged he received a phone call and we had an appointment at West Suffolk Hospital the following day where they told us he had cancer of the larynx ( voice box) and the only chance to try their best to get rid of the cancer is to remove his voice box where he will stay in hospital for up to 2 weeks if no complications followed by 6 weeks of recovery then after that 5 sessions of radiotherapy a week for the next 6 weeks. This is a life changing operation for Chris as he will have a stoma in his neck and he will have to learn to breathe, swallow and talk again as best he can with the prothesis they will put in his neck.
If anyone can spare anything it would be so much appreciated Chris is self employed so isn't entitled to any sick pay and I'm currently not working due to having 3 young children, 2 of which are 3 and under.
All of our savings have now gone due to trying to keep on top on everything as Chris has already been out of work for 7 weeks. Thank you for taking the time to read his story.
