At just 19 years old, my life changed forever. On 13 January 2010, whilst serving in
Helmand Province, Afghanistan, I was hit by an improvised explosive device
whilst sweeping for mines. In an instance, everything went black. When I woke
up a week later, in intensive care, I learned I had lost both my legs, a thumb, and
parts of my fingers. My body was covered in shrapnel. Over the following months
I underwent more than 20 operations and began the long road to recovery at
Headley Court, the Army’s rehabilitation centre.
Cycling became my turning point, a lifeline that gave me purpose again. It was a
way to push my limits, rebuild my confidence, and reconnect with the person I
was before the blast. I discovered hand cycling in 2017 and instantly fell in love
with the sport. Since then, I have dedicated myself to hand cycling, training, and
challenging what’s possible.
Today, as a British hand cyclist, I’m driven by the same determination that got
me through my recovery, to go faster, work harder, and inspire others to
overcome adversity. My journey is about proving that no matter what happens,
You can always move forward
