Matthew Faber, 37 years old, owns a home in Miller Place, NY with his wife Nicole Faber and two children, Jackson (5) and Grayson (2).
On February 23, 2023, Matt asked Nicole to bring him to the ER due to a painful cough. Matt was quickly diagnosed with an aggressive case of pneumonia, tested positive for Strep A (which has a high mortality rate), and a cavitary lesion was then detected in his right lung. The bacteria collected in the cavitary lesion, which burst and Matt’s condition quickly diminished. He was admitted to ICU, sedated, and intubated on a ventilator. We were initially told to expect this to last 4-5 days…..it is now been over a month.
On Day 3, Matt was transported from Mather Hospital in Port Jefferson to Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New Hyde Park. He has gone through more than anyone of us could ever imagine!! The bacterial infection in his lung escalated and caused Matt to go into septic shock, fever rise to 108, heart failure, liver failure, and kidney failure. He had to be proned, put on 4 blood pressors, and be heavily sedated for weeks. During this time, he had multiple blood transfusions, multiple strokes, a collapsed lung, had 2 chest tubes, and the list goes on….
Matt has proven himself to be a true fighter!!!! He has overcome beyond what anyone expected. We were told that age is on his side and a wonderful medical staff are invaluable contributors!!
Today, Matt is still in ICU fighting his lung infection. While it has started to heal, his lung is still in critical condition with long-term damage and scarring. We have hopes that he will be moving to a respiratory floor very soon. Although he recently had a tracheotomy procedure, he is still hooked to the ventilator. He’s continuously fighting to get home to his wife, kids, family and friends!
The doctors told us to expect a very very long road to recovery - estimating approximately 2 years to be completely back to “normal”. Matt is starting from square one to gain all muscle mass. He will need intensive rehab, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy.
This gofundme is to help Matt and his family pay for all financial and medical needs. The family took an enormous pay cut with Matt on disability. Matt also holds his family’s health insurance through his job. Unfortunately after 12 weeks of not working, he will lose all benefits. And, it is currently unknown when Matt will be able to work again.
All donations received will be used to pay living costs, hospital bills, acquire new family medical insurance, and obtain top-notch rehabilitation services to ensure a full recovery.
