UPDATE: Biopsy went well, as long as the results come back with answers the next step will be surgery if there not happy with the results they will do a second biopsy where they drill into the bone and take a sample so fingers crossed it doesn’t come to that. It was a long day but he did great and has been in good spirits through all of it.
My name is Lindsey Albury and I started this for a friend of mine Chara Barbeau and Desi Ebare and their son Louis.
So all of this started last year in June, Louis started getting back pain to the point he was having a hard time doing anything and couldn’t play football anymore or ride his bike, they had to fight to get him X-rays, blood work and an 2 mri’s, after being referred to a Paediatrician she got everything moving, he had X-rays and was diagnosed with osteopenia and sent for a bone density. They found that was not what he had, he then finally was sent for two mri’s and after the second was admitted to the hospital for 4 days on iv antibiotics followed by 6 weeks of oral antibiotics at home, they said it was cause from and infection in his discs and it crushed his L1 and L2 and they were sent to London to see a team of doctors there. He started to feel better and go back to being able to do some things he could before but his movement of his lower back and legs are limited and bending is extremely limited. Fast forward to this summer almost exactly a year and he declined again and came home from school on lunch to lay down and stopped riding his bike and hanging out with friends. Another mri was done and the damage is getting worse now, another trip back to London and was agreed by end of summer he’ll have surgery but now they want a biopsy of that part of the spine so back to London for that and then go from there to figure out when surgery will be. Louis loves playing football but now is unable to and lived on his bike, if he’s out now for short time he has to come home and rest, his pain isn’t always manageable but he’s been a trooper through all of this.
Discitis or vertebral osteomyelitis is the diagnosis they gave him which is very rare for a healthy active teen. August 14th is the biopsy in London and unsure of how long they will be there until they get there and then planning for surgery this fall.
As a community, lets help out this family and take some of the financial burden off them so Chara and Desi can focus on their sons medical appointments and healing and not bills and cost of stays and travel. ❤️
