Help Zagat to rebuild his livlihood

Zagat worked as a sherpa on a trek that I did just north of Kathmandu, Nepal.

We have kept in touch exchanging our different farming/building/growing cultures/ways of life on social media.

Covid-19 has meant that he and his community have had no work (and hence no income and there are no state benefits), as there have been no tourist for over 12 months. At the same time as the pandemic outbreak, his father was taken seriously ill and had to spend weeks in hospital in Kathmandu. The family had to use up savings and borrow money from friends to pay medical bills which are also ongoing. I started this fund raising page at a very difficult time for them to help with the medical bills and to also help them to invest in ideas that might generate some income to support themselves going forwards.

Zagat is growing crops in his mountain community to sustain his family but is wanting to breed goats and chickens and wants to build a basic polytunnel and install a rainwater harvesting system to have fresh vegetables for his family and community all year round. This is challenging in the Himalayas.

We are trying to raise enough funds to buy goats and items such as an incubator (so that he can hatch and raise hens to sell) and basic building materials as well as to help cover huge medical costs.

His father is home but needs constant care which Zagat gives -  so he is working hard with many demands and challenges to face especially for one so young in a harsh environment. I feel very proud of how he is coping and the way he is implementing ideas. These are such difficult days for so many, but if you feel you can help, I know Zagat, his family and his community would be extremely grateful for anything that you can contribute at this very challenging time for them with no income, no support, no sign of pandemic easing out there and medical bills to pay.
