May 29th 2015 my sister Laura's life changed forever. She went from going to the gym 5 days a week and working 10 plus hour days teaching people young and old to swim to now using every ounce of energy getting out of bed and trying to live some sort of life. This happened when she was walking along side of a pool and fell on the edge of an angled, slippery coping. Seven fractures at once between her ankle, foot and toes. After 6 months of trying to heal without success Laura underwent surgery and grafting with placement of hardware. 5 months later she thought she was free of the cast and walking boot but was then she was diagnosed with a medical condition known as CRPS https://www.tspain.com/condition/complex-regional-pain-syndrome-crps from a cast that was put on too tight cutting off circulation to her leg. Her left foot swells up like a balloon and she can’t place weight on it without getting excruciating pain. Laura have fallen repeatedly because she can’t place my own weight on her foot. Within 2 1/2 months of trying to treat this she end up with a Spinal Cord Stimulator https://www.webmd.com/back-pain/guide/spinal-cord-stimulation to help with the weakness and pain.
After the last 2 1/2 years her life and livelihood has diminished. She can no longer workout. Laura can only drive short distances and she has to spend up to 10 days a month in the hospital having 5 hour infusions through a pic line trying to save the dying tissue in her leg. Now over the past month the CRPS has also attacked her pelvis, right upper thigh, and right shoulder. In five weeks Laura is scheduled for another surgery to replace the stimulator.
Through all of this she have tried to keep her head up and be positive but she is showing exhaustion. Laura is trying to continue working as a high school swimming coach and teaching small children water safety and how to swim but lately her energy is so low after the infusions it takes every ounce for her to get up and go.
Laura struggling to make ends meet having gone through her savings and very few swim lessons due to our current weather conditions. Yesterday she got a new pic line that will be in for the next year of treatment and I pray that during this year doctors can find a cure before her tissue in both of her legs turn any darker from the tissue damage and need to be amputated. I pray God hears my prayers and helps her doctors find a cure.
