Hi my name is Trevia Jackson and I am a 1st year medical student at the Florida State University College of Medicine. Partnering with the FSU College of Medicine faculty and the student group, Students Interested in Global, I have the wonderful opportunity to work in a clinic in the rural village of Los Cedros, Nicaragua. As many of you are aware, I have always been passionate about global health and doing my part to help address some of the health disparities we face worldwide.
Imagine a time in your past when you or a loved one was sick and needed medical attention. Now imagine that you weren't able to see a doctor or specialist when you most needed one. What would have happened? From March 4th-11th, I will be embarking on a medical service trip to Los Cedros, Nicaragua. I will be working alongside medical professionals, medical students, residents, and members of the Los Cedros community to serve underprivileged populations. We will be staffing a clinic that will provide primary care for individuals who would otherwise lack any access to basic healthcare. However, our service goes beyond typical medical mission trips. We aim to resolve the root of the problem by promoting preventive health, teaching residents how to maintain their health instead of solely treating disease. Additionally, patient care doesn’t stop at the end of the week. The Florida State University has established a long-standing relationship with this community going back as far as 2010. This allows for regular follow-ups and continuity of care that includes emotional and educational support for patients and their families.
This amazing opportunity to improve global health is only possible with donations from people like you. Not only is this an opportunity to impact people in Nicaragua, this is also a learning opportunity for myself in how I can implement the skills learned today into my career as a physician. My goal is to raise $1500 to cover my participation fee, flight, and medical supply donations. This trip would not be possible without your support. My family and I sincerely appreciate your help!
