FIGHT TWICE: ORIGINAL STORY

November 11th

Recently diagnosed with glioblastoma, a cancerous brain tumor, Trent Goings is prepared to battle.

A born fighter, he grew up in Toledo. His mother attended one of the only Mennonite churches in the area with her 9 kids. Not wanting Trent to head down a path he couldn't return from, his mother sent him to Kidron Central Christian to finish high school. During his experience in Kidron he met Heather. They got engaged right before Trent went to the Navy for bootcamp. They got married before he went out on several tours.

Just like in the movies, Heather awaited her new husband on the pier as he was arriving home from a six-month tour. As she waited for him on that exciting day, two naval officers whisked her away in a car, informing her that Trent had nearly died in an accident as the ship arrived at port. He had chosen to fight for his life at the mere age of 20, reaching into hot steam—after a valve blew—to save his own life. This action caused 4th degree burns to his face, chest and arms. After many months of pain and fighting, Trent recovered. Him and Heather went on to have three beautiful daughters.

They’ve had ups and downs dealing with the traumas of their shared life. But they’ve been doing well over the last several years, reconnecting as a couple and celebrating the life they’ve been given.

But on October 18th their life made a surprising turn.

Trent is a longtime employee of Melway Paving, a Holmes County business, and on that Friday morning something completely out of character happened: Trent didn’t show up for work. In the 26 years he’s worked there this has never happened. His boss Steve stopped in at his place to check on him. Trent came to the door and told him he overslept. Not seeing anything unusual Steve left, but a few hours later Trent still hadn’t shown up for work. His friends and coworkers began calling his family.

Heather returned from her early morning job to find him very disoriented. Her and her family called an ambulance and got him to the hospital. The first hospital determined he had had a seizure, but sent him on to a larger hospital for more tests. In just 24 hours, after an MRI, the doctor on call gave Heather and the family the news: Trent had what they believed to be a brain tumor. Most likely cancerous, and looking like glioblastoma—an aggressive, cancerous brain tumor.

We were instantly told to not read about this diagnosis—that the research and data we would find would be devastating.

And it was.

The diagnosis has a short life span. It is rare. It is all the things you never ever want to hear about someone you love.

How would Trent react?

Doctors told Trent on the morning of the 20th, but as he woke up over those next few days, and it began to sink in what type of battle he was up against, he was just as positive and ready to fight as he was all those years ago, 27 to be exact.

Fight for your life…not just once but twice. All in 47 years. We are now asking that you rally around Trent and help him fight one more time.

Trent and Heather are looking at many treatments to combat this life-threatening diagnosis. Multiple doctors across the world have given their opinions.

Some of these treatments are not covered by insurance.

One in particular has an opening at the Hope 4 Cancer Center on November 20th — 9 days away. This GoFundMe page will go directly to pay for this treatment. In 9 short days we are asking you to help Trent survive this fight. As Trent secures his family’s future and fights to get them taken care of, we will fight for him.

Fight with us for Trent’s life as we open this on Veteran’s Day. It’s time to fight twice.
