TJ Varsity Boys Soccer Tournament - 2020
Donation protected
For the past two years, many of you have given generously to help the Thomas Jefferson High School varsity boys soccer team go to the Governor's Elite Cup tournament in Georgetown, Texas. This year, we are asking for your help again - but this time, the stakes are higher.
On October 20, 2019, Thomas Jefferson High School was severely damaged by an EF3 tornado that tore across North Dallas. The campus has been shut down indefinitely and the students relocated to a previously shuttered middle school 9 miles away.
TJ students and teachers have valiantly fought to establish a sense of normalcy and maintain optimism in their new, unenviable situation - but the stresses are real and persistent.
The successful TJ soccer program has always been a great source of pride for the school and now is the time to come alongside these boys to lift the spirits of the whole school and let them know that they are not forgotten!
The tournament is January 9-11, 2020. Vans must be secured with a deposit by December 9, 2019, so we are trying to raise the funds by then, but anything at anytime is helpful (even after the trip!).
We have set our goal at $6000 based on costs of the two previous trips. Any additional funds raised will remain be used for the support of TJ athletics.
Finally, in addition to your financial help, we would love to have a huge crowd to support the team in Georgetown, so if you're up for a fun weekend road trip to Central Texas, we'd love to see you there!
The schedule will be:
Thurs. Jan. 9 - 8pm @ Georgetown Eastview HS Stadium vs. Round Rock
Fri. Jan. 10 - 11am @ Georgetown HS Birkelbach Stadium vs. Harlan
Sat. Jan. 11 - 1pm @ Georgetown Eastview HS Stadium vs. Shadow Creek
About this campaign:
My name is Jeffrey McWhorter. I am an elder at Northway Church , which sits right next to TJ and was also catastrophically damaged by the tornado . Our church, and specifically our small group, has had an ongoing relationship with the TJ boys soccer team since 2016. We have helped raise funds for this tournament for the past two years and have also supported the team through pre-game dinners, attendance at games, etc.
From 2017-2019, I photographically documented the stories of several Central American immigrant players in a piece that was published last summer in the Dallas Morning News .
The money raised in this campaign will be used for transportation, food, lodging and any other travel expenses for 25 players and 2 coaches on the trip to Georgetown on January 9-11, 2020. Once the money is raised, I will transfer it all into the Thomas Jefferson High School varsity boys soccer expense account. Any additional funds raised will also be transferred to this account and will be used for ongoing opportunities to support the team such as equipment, meals, alumni game, an end-of-the-season event, or next year's tournament.
