In Loving Memory of TJ Silas

It’s with deep sadness that we share the passing of TJ Silas, whose health struggles—kept mostly private—have led to a loss that comes as a shock to so many of us. What’s not surprising, however, is the outpouring of love that has followed. In the days since his passing, it’s become clear just how many lives TJ touched, how many hearts he lifted, and how profoundly bright and beautiful his spirit truly was.

TJ was a champion on and off the court, a lifelong learner, and a warrior in every sense of the word. His strength, humor, and determination seemed endless — and I think that’s part of why so many of us are struggling to believe this news. He appeared to be someone who would eternally be strong, eternally be powerful. But like many people who carry deep strength, TJ also suffered privately in ways that not everyone saw.

I had the privilege of knowing TJ from a very young age. We met and shared a deep connection during our most tender years, from ages 13 to 18, and we’ve stayed in touch through the years since. Like so many others, I loved him — and I continue to.

Now, as we grieve and remember the incredible person he was, we have an opportunity to give back some of the love he gave to so many. This fundraiser has been created to help support TJ’s family with the costs of funeral arrangements, medical expenses, and to bring him home to Southern Illinois, where he was born and raised.
