Hello Everyone! My name is Sarah and I have started this fundraiser on behalf of my amazing best friend Alex Boutté. As many of you know, almost exactly 6 years ago Alex was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma (bone cancer) in her right leg/knee. She had surgery to remove the cancer and her scans had been clear...until November 2019.
“It’s back” is all she text me the day she found out. I was in complete shock and horrified to think she would have to go through another surgery and possibly chemo this time around. My horror turned into utter disbelief when she told me the devastating news; she would have to have her right leg amputated above the knee in order to have the best possible chance at long term survival and the best chance that her cancer would not return. She decided that day that she wanted to live, and while this news was terrible, she knew exactly what she needed to do.
To say that Alex is the strongest person I have ever met is an understatement. On December 17th she had surgery. I was so lucky to get to see her in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit afterwards. She was smiling and she was her usual perky self. You guys, SHE WAS SMILING! I was in shock of how well she was doing physically and emotionally. She had (and continues to have) the most positive outlook on this entire situation.
She immediately began researching prosthetics for people with very active lifestyles and she found some! She also found silicone “covers” for the prosthetic that will allow her prosthetic to look very real and match her beautiful skin tone. As you can imagine insurance does not fully cover these.
I have had many people ask me what they can do to help Alex and Victor in this time of change. For those that have asked how you can help, this is how! The money raised will go toward Alex’s prosthetic and prosthetic cover. Prior to her surgery she told me “I just really hope I can feel comfortable enough to eventually wear shorts again”. I think this is very possible and this is how we help!
Today, Alex is 4 weeks post surgery and she is doing fabulous! She still has several more weeks before she can be fitted for her prosthesis, but her attitude is still positive and this is so inspiring. She has a new energy about her and I am amazed by her everyday.
Alex, you are the most inspiring person I have ever met. You are a WARRIOR! You have a team of supporters behind you and we love all you so much. ❤️
