My name is Raúl, and I am reaching out to ask for your support for my tío Jorge, my uncle, a loving father of three, husband, communicator, and valued member of his family and community in Quito, Ecuador. Recently, Tío Jorge received the devastating diagnosis of advanced colon cancer, which has affected every aspect of his life and put an immense strain on his family.

Who Is Tío Jorge?

Jorge Oquendo, or how I call him, Tío Jorge, has spent his life in service to his community and family. Professionally, he’s dedicated his career to communication, working on projects centered around development and community impact. With a background in anthropology, he brings a thoughtful perspective to his work, focusing on media production that sheds light on social issues. Always a pioneer of culture, he opened a restaurant fusing Japanese cuisine with Ecuadorian flavors, a family favorite. Known for his strong laughter, his warmth, his spontaneous culinary creations and his passion for the world around him, Tío Jorge has always strived to leave a little spark of joy and amazement in those surrounding him.

But Tío Jorge’s most cherished role is that of a father. He has three children, the youngest is his nine-year-old daughter, who looks up to him with admiration and love. Now, facing this immense challenge, it is he who needs the love and support of his family and community.

His Health Battle

A few months ago, Tío Jorge began experiencing severe health issues, and after a series of consultations, he was diagnosed with an advanced form of colon cancer. After numerous assessments, doctors performed a surgery to remove the cancer and an ileostomy—a life-altering procedure that allows him to manage his condition but requires daily medical care and supplies. He now relies on ostomy bags daily, a challenging adjustment, and his condition requires more medical procedures to halt the disease's progress and improve his quality of life. Despite his strength, this illness has made everyday tasks physically and emotionally exhausting. He's now undergoing chemotherapy, and will require a new surgery in the next few months to remove the ostomy bags and reattach his intestine.

Every day is a physical and emotional challenge, yet Jorge remains strong and determined to recover for his family. This illness has upended his life and placed an enormous strain on his loved ones, who are doing everything possible to support him.
