A Wonderful Mt. Prospect Family is in Trouble
The family is the Haffeys… Jim, Tina, Ryan (21), Junior at UIC, Tyler (17), Senior at Hersey High School & Kara (13), 7th grader at River Trails Middle School.
Tina Haffey, a vibrant, active and health conscious women, was shocked at her diagnosis of Stage III Invasive Ductal Carcinoma (breast cancer) in November. Her mastectomy and sentinel nodes removal was delayed several months due to their insurance company claiming “pre-existing condition.” With the surgery finally completed in January, there are now many months of chemotherapy and radiation ahead. Even with new insurance in place, there is a huge deductible and many of the drugs and treatments are not 100% covered. Medical bills that the insurance company has refused to pay are already nearing $20,000.
Both Tina and Jim are self-employed. Tina is a real estate broker and Jim is a contractor by trade.
Personal Note: Jim actually remodeled our kitchen last year. Those who have seen it, can appreciate his talent and Mary and I LOVE the final product!
BUT there are no sick days or paid leaves for either of them. When they don’t work, they don’t bring in money. And, as it turns out, the mortgage company doesn’t care if you have cancer and wants to be paid on time. Tina’s work will be limited while undergoing cancer treatments. And by taking the time to care for Tina, Jim’s business has also taken a hit. They don’t want to lose their home as Tina battles for her life.
Mt. Prospect American Legionnaires may already know Jim. As a volunteer, Jim is a coach of the American Legion Baseball Team. He is invaluable not only as a coach, but also as a role model and moral backbone of the team. Eighteen and nineteen year old players behave and the atmosphere in the dugout is “team” because of Jim. Oh – and his son, Tyler, is a two year MVP catcher.
I have known the family for many years and I would do anything for them. PLEASE meet the Haffeys for yourself on their Facebook pages, “Jimmy Haffey” and “Tina Lamonaca Haffey”.
To all my friends (and my friends’ friends, etc.).… Bottom line, this wonderful family needs our help right NOW. Please be as generous as you can. Imagine your family in this positon…
PLEASE PASS THIS ON TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW. The need is urgent!
Many Thanks in Advance.
Yours in Service,
Bill Starr
