Hi everyone! My name is Timothy Tukes, and I'm a homeless queer college student. This May I'll be graduating magna cum laude from Morehouse College with a Bachelors of Arts degree in cinema, television, & emerging media studies.
I'm asking for family, friends, and everyone in between to donate to my college graduation gift fund. All donations from this fund will be used to help support my transition to adulthood and literal move to New York City, which include:
- flight ticket
- MTA pass
- first three months rent
- a mattress
- a bed
- a comforter, sheets, pillows
- food budget
I make this sincere request not out of greed but out of humility. I am sole provider for my financial and emotional well-being. Since high school, I've dealt with housing insecurity, more specifically homelessness. Being kicked out of my home in ninth grade for being queer I've often felt like I had to fend for myself and education was my only way out.
Additional background information:
During my four years of college, I primarily supported myself both financially and emotionally. My relationship with my nuclear family, particularly my parents, is quite estranged. I took ad hoc work as a professional vocalist at churches, a college Spanish tutor, a digital strategy consultant and recently a freelance book editor to support myself throughout the year. Occasionally, friends, distant family members and even professors would offer kind gestures like washing my clothes and buying me groceries when I couldn't afford to.
Fortunately, my struggles have not clouded my hope. I still despite hardship have maintained a competitive grade point average and senior leadership positions on several boards and student organizations including Morehouse College Safe Space, the Committee for Diversity & Inclusion, & The White House Initiative on HBCUs.
After graduation, I plan to start my career in the management consulting industry as an analyst in New York City. I'm very excited about moving from Georgia to New York, but admittedly I am quite anxious about financing the transition. After working in the consulting industry, I plan to attend business school to obtain a MBA.
