Professor Juan Carlos Barreto came to the United States with a simple hope: to find safety for himself and his family, and to continue serving others through his work. As a committed human rights defender, he has dedicated years to exposing the Venezuelan crisis to the world. His knowledge, integrity, and compassion are the kind of values that enrich any community.
But on January 16, 2026, Juan Carlos was unexpectedly detained at home by ICE agents, despite having a pending asylum case and complying fully with every legal requirement. Today he is being held in El Paso, Texas — far from his wife and child, who are waiting anxiously for him to come home.
His family is now facing the painful reality of not having the financial means to pay for the legal representation and bond needed to secure his release. We are asking for help from those who know him and from those who believe in justice, dignity, and compassion. Any contribution — big or small — will make a difference and bring Juan Carlos one step closer to reuniting with his family.
Thank you for standing with him in this difficult moment.
