Time capsule for little Angie on Pitcairn island

Donation protected
The goal is to raise 6,000 € to leave a time capsule for little Angie on the remote Pitcairn island. See below for the full story.

Who am I?

Hello world! This is me, Kirill, a 32-year old electronic engineer living in the suburbs of the city of Lights – Paris. I am passionate about traveling and have already been in 40 countries around the world. My favourite activities include tennis, photography and drums (mostly blues and rock music). I have also become a dad in August 2019.

And this is little Angie (short for Angélique). She is our little princess. As a matter of fact, she was born only a few kilometers away from the royal palace of Versailles, the home of the Sun King Louis XIV.

She is a cute little baby, although I can't show you a better picture of her since she didn't give me her consent for this (she did say something like “gaga” but I can't be sure what it meant exactly). She doesn't do much yet because she's only a few months old but we hope that some day she becomes a beautiful, smart and confident woman. We'll do everything it takes to offer her the love, education and guidance she deserves. But we also want her to enjoy life as an exciting adventure!

So what is the plan?

I would like to offer Angie an unusual present for her eighteenth birthday: I want to send her a time capsule. A letter written in 2020 and buried in the ground until 2037 (or even longer). But there is nothing original in burying the letter in my backyard, for instance. That is why I want to leave it in one of the most remote places in the world – Pitcairn island.

Pitcairn is home to one of the most isolated communities on planet Earth. About 50 inhabitants, most of them descended from the HMS Bounty mutineers  of British origin and their Tahitian companions. A visit to Pitcairn is a trip both through space and time, a glance into the lives of those seamen who decided to leave behind the troubles of the civilized world for a simpler (yet harder in many ways) existence.

How remote is it?

Pitcairn island is a small speck of land lost somewhere in the middle of the Pacific ocean. If you want to understand just how remote it is, have a look at the following map:

The red marker is Pitcairn island. Can you see any land around it? No? This is because the closest land is French Polynesia, about 1,300 miles (2,100 km) northwest. New Zealand is more than 3,300 miles (5,300 km) away. The closest inhabited spot to Pitcairn is actually the International Space Station when it passes overhead.

This is what I would have to do to get to Adamstown which is Pitcairn's only city:

- Fly from Paris to Papeete (French Polynesia) via San Francisco – about 22 hours
- Fly from Papeete to Mangareva (Gambier Islands) – 4 hours
- Take the ferry to Rikitea village – about 40 min
- Take the supply ship MV Silver Supporter to Adamstown – about 32 hours (in good weather)

Sounds simple... or not. Anyway, it is probably one of the most exciting trips one can imagine. My hope is that little Angie may embark on a similar journey one day to retrieve the time capsule and read my letter from the past.

How can you help?

Of course, such a trip involves its fare share of expenses and this is why I started this campaign. I need to gather about 6,000 € to complete my journey. The plan is to go to Pitcairn in the end of May 2020 or later to avoid the cyclones and I would like to wrap up my campaign here by the end of February to have several months to arrange the flights and everything else.
Here is the cost breakdown:

- Trip on the Silver Supporter – 3,200 €
- Flight from Paris to Papeete – about 1,500 €
- Accomodation and meals on Pitcairn (4 days) – 550 €
- Flight from Papeete to Mangareva – about 340 €
- Time capsule – 50 € (for example this one  on Amazon)
- Pitcairn landing fee – 54 €
- Ferry in Mangareva – 17 €
- Other expenses (accomodation and food in Papeete etc.) – about 300 €
You can help me gather the required amount and offer Angie the adventure of her lifetime for her eighteenth birthday. She'll know there is a letter from the past waiting for her on Pitcairn and one day she'll complete the same journey to retrieve it. Maybe it will be easier to reach Pitcairn in the future – maybe not – but I hope it will be as exciting as it is nowadays.

Any contribution, even the smallest one, is valuable and important to me. However if you decide to give 50 € or more, I will send you a postcard from Pitcairn via New Zealand (I hear that stamps from Pitcairn are pretty valuable and rare). If you are an organisation or an association and you can afford to give 100 € or more, I will take a picture of your flag or emblem somewhere on Pitcairn and send it to you. Thank you and let the adventure begin!

You can contact me on [email redacted] and I will try to answer any question you might have about my project, this campaign or the donation process.
