Timber's FIP Journey

My name is Sierra, and I have been fostering kitties for over three years now--I started after my beloved Bubby passed away in June of 2020. Timber (fka Professor X while in foster care) was one of my early fosters in 2021; he was found alone crying in a woman's driveway. He was a skittish little guy, we don't know what he'd been through, but he bonded strongly with all of his foster siblings. He was eventually adopted by a great family who was willing to give him a chance despite his scaredy-cat nature.

Fast forward to last week, he suddenly went blind. You can imagine how this might impact an already scared kitty, now not being able to see the world in front of him. After examining and doing blood work, it was determined he most likely has the ocular form of dry FIP. Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) is a viral disease caused by certain strains of the feline coronavirus. Most strains of the feline coronavirus are found in the gastrointestinal tract and cause only short periods of diarrhea and/or mild upper respiratory troubles that resolve on their own. Infected cats usually show no symptoms in the initial stages of coronavirus infection, and the virus only progresses into clinical FIP in a small number of infected cats—5% to 10%— when there is a mutation of the virus or an abnormality in the immune response. You can read more about it here: https://www.saveacat.org/fip-felv-fiv.html

FIP used to be a death sentence and was nearly 100% fatal, but NO LONGER! There is an 84-day treatment called GS-441524 that has been proven to cure MOST kitties! This is an amazing development in feline medicine, but it is NOT cheap. Pricing can range anywhere from $1,000-$3,000+. It is a once daily injection or oral tablet for 84 days, along with monthly blood work to monitor progress. After the 84-day treatment, they are monitored for another 84 days. If their blood work comes back normal after that monitoring period, they are considered cured!

Due to a number of different circumstances, his adoptive family is unable to commit to this extensive treatment plan, so I am taking Timber back in under the rescue umbrella to give him a chance to fight this. While he will be under the rescue umbrella, I am financing this journey individually because, as with most rescues, they are severely low on funds. We have a caring and dedicated foster that will welcome Timber into their home for the treatment period.

Other ways to donate with no fees attached:

I will be keeping a spreadsheet of all donations to track our progress towards our goal. I am most appreciative of any donations that will go towards giving this sweet boy a fighting chance!

If there are any excess donations, they will go to Lil Roar Cat Rescue where Timber came from.
