Tim Spalding's Health Aid

On 4/27/21 Tim was taken by ambulance to John Muir Medical Center in Concord after he was found collapsed on the floor of his home.

Within minutes of arriving at the hospital, Tim suffered a sudden cardiac arrest. After 10 minutes of chest compressions, hospital staff were able to get his heart beating again, but he needed to immediately be connected to life saving devices, including a ventilator.

Tim would remain in a coma, on life support for a full week. Through various testing, doctors were able to find out that Tim not only suffered from diabetic ketoacidosis, but his body was battling multiple infections among a slew of other things.  After the cardiac arrest, Tim’s organs quickly started shutting down and the outlook was not good...

After 6 days at John Muir, Tim needed to be transferred (yes, while still connected to life support, SO nerve-wracking!) to his “home hospital,” of Kaiser Walnut Creek where he would continue care.

Since the moment Tim went into cardiac arrest, the odds have not been in his favor; his chance of survival was low and his chance of waking up from a coma without significant brain damage was even lower. An MRI was performed and by some miracle, came back clear, no evidence of brain damage!!

Doctors started lowering the settings on the ventilator to see how Tim’s body would take it, and on May 4th, Tim woke up! By the next day he no longer needed the ventilator to breathe for him at all!

He has since gone through daily breathing treatments, constant IV antibiotics, daily blood draws, CT scans, etc, etc and by yet another MIRACLE, by May 8th, Tim was talking and being fed “real” food, as he watched his birthday slideshow!

He has had a lot of confusion and weakness, but is getting better and stronger everyday. His body is still fighting infection and his blood pressure is needing to be very closely monitored, but Tim was able to begin some physical therapy and has since been able to take a few steps(with a walker, but still amazing)!
He will remain in a skilled nursing facility for at least another couple weeks while he gets strong enough to undergo some needed surgeries.

He has a very long road ahead of him, full of daily physical therapy, outpatient cardiac rehab, further testing, surgery, kidney & liver monitoring, specialty treatments and daily in-home health assistance, but against all the odds....he is ALIVE and he is Tim!! His memories are there, his humor is coming back, and though his body hasn’t quite caught up yet we are counting our blessings DAILY.

Though Danielle lives in Oregon, Shane lives in Roseville, Jamis in Sacramento and Jackson still too young to drive, at least one of Tim’s kids have been by his side almost everyday and feel so fortunate to have their dad back.

As you can imagine, the reality of the financial burden that these countless medical bills, no income, special in-home equipment, home nursing services, special programs, medications, monthly rent and utilities, transportation services, etc...is starting to make all of our heads spin a bit.

Danielle, Shane, Jamis and Jackson want to be sure Tim receives all the care he needs and can live the remainder of his life comfortably. Though none of them would ever reach out for help, they have approved this Go Fund Me page to be set up in the hopes that some of the focus can be taken off of the impending financial strain and focus can be on supporting their dad in his recovery.
So as their supportive spouses, we thought we could best help right now by rolling out this ask for help.

The pandemic has made this a particularly straining year for many of us, but we just kindly ask that if you are willing and able to make a donation to help Tim and his kids during this difficult time, it would be so appreciated!

Lastly, we ask that you continue to keep Tim in your thoughts and prayers, wishing him a speedy (as possible) recovery!

With Thanks,
Tim's Family
