One of the biggest challenges for students and avocational scientists in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) fields is obtaining financial support to attend conferences and conduct research. Often, students and avocational scientists pay out of pocket to attend professional meetings, or if they do win awards, they have to pay the upfront costs of the meeting and then reimburse themselves with the award money. This financial burden is amplified for students who hold multiple underrepresented identities and identify as underrepresented minorities.

Geosciences are one of the least diverse fields in STEM (Bernard and Cooperdock, 2018), due to several barriers that still remain. A significant barrier is lack of secure financial support for students to attend conferences, a place where mentors are found, collaborations are forged, confidence is gained, and new, exciting scientific ideas are exchanged.

To help students and avocational scientists attend such conferences, Time Scavengers has created the Tilly Edinger Travel Fund. This fund pays for conference registration and abstract fees up-front, therefore eliminating a large portion of the financial burden placed on students and avocational scientists when attending conferences.

Our travel grant differs from other travel grants in three ways:

1. Both students and avocational scientists are eligible
2. Costs are covered upfront
3. All attendees, regardless if they are presenting research or not, are eligible
4. Applications are ranked to prioritize support for applicants belonging to groups underrepresented in the geosciences

Our goal for this fundraising effort is $2,000, which we anticipate will pay for conference registration and abstract fees for 3 to 5 students (allowing for flexibility with varying conference costs).

Additional ways to donate include:
1. Through the Time Scavengers website ‘Donate’  page
2. Directly through PayPal using the URL PayPal.me/TimeScavengers
3. Recurring bi-monthly donations through the Time Scavengers Patreon  page

A call for Tilly Edinger Travel Grant applications will open late this year/early 2021. Applications will be assessed three times (February, June, and October) each calendar year to accommodate students and avocational professionals attending meetings throughout the year.

If you donated to this campaign, we would appreciate a short quote or statement about why you donated and supported this effort here on GoFundMe. These statements will be used in our social media campaign (and you can choose to remain anonymous if you wish!).
