Tightrope's Big Move!

Tightrope Theatre was founded in 2020 (perfect timing am-I-right??) with the dream of bringing more joy and connection to the community while also creating sustainable employment for artists through high quality improv theatre and classes.

In August 2021, we opened our venue on 2343 Main Street in Mount Pleasant, Vancouver. Over the past five years we’ve brought countless strangers together to share in laughter and joy through 100s of shows and classes.

Our goal is simple - to have folks leave feeling more joyfully connected to one another than when they arrived. There is so much hardship out there in the world, life ebbs and flows, and the challenges seem to always persist. But what we know for sure is that real human connection, joy, and laughter give us the fuel necessary to show up as our best selves to face those ebbs and flows in life. This is our raison d'être. It's how and why we keep going, even when things are tough.

Speaking of things getting tough…

We were recently faced with a tough challenge ourselves. Our home in Mount Pleasant became untenable and we were forced to move due to circumstances beyond our control: challenges with the City's archaic zoning and property use laws, as well as an absurdly unsustainable rental increase.

We had to find a new home, and fast. Luckily as improvisers we were able to shift into gear and find ourselves a new and beautiful space to continue the work we know is so important to our community. That being said due to the unforeseen and speedy nature of this move, it was of course, extremely costly.

So here we are reaching out to our community to see if we can raise some funds to help offset the moving costs incurred so we can continue to laugh and dance and be mischievous all together for years to come.

The funds we raise are going towards covering the following incurred costs:

- Materials and labour costs required to renovate and outfit a new space (construction, electrical, plumbing, etc)

- The demolition of our old space - removing the stage and structures we had built in our previous location (including countless trips to the dump done so heroically by Ali’s dad - we love you Scottie!)

- Two weeks of operational revenue loss (cancelled classes, and shows) mid-season

- Rental space for classes

What each donation will cover:

$10-25: construction and painting materials: think painter's tape, a package of shims or screws, a bottle of wine at the end of the day to quiet Ali and Sarah’s anxiety.

$50-$100: a tank of gas to cover one of the 21 trips back and forth from the old to new location, trips to the dump, pizza for the paint crew, half a day of moving and construction labour.

$250-$500: dishwasher repair (we met the greatest ever dishwasher repair man, and he assured us servicing dishwashers is ALL he does, and he LOVES it.), marketing of our new location, outdoor sign installation, PAINT.

$1000-$1500: lumber for our new stage and pony walls, concrete cutting and removal.

$1750-$2500: drywall materials and labour, electrical labour & materials, one week of lost revenue.

Your gift to us will generate a gift of thanks for you! From free popcorn to naming rights to "own" the stage for a month, we will make sure your generosity is recognized AND appreciated!
