Tiffany’s summer started out bright in May, as she was very excited to start a new job on 5/17. On June 3rd she began having very mild pain in her hip. The mild pain was slowly increasing so she decided to get it X-rayed. Tiffany was diagnosed with a rare bone disease called Avascular Osteonecrosis of the hip. This occurs when the blood supply feeding the femoral head (the ball in the joint) is compromised causing that part of the bone to die. She had to wait until her insurance kicked in on 7/2 to see a specialist.
After 2 painful weeks, she met with an SSM hip specialist on 7/15 who ordered 10-panel Xrays of both hips. The left hip was so comprised, she was told it was already partially collapsed and she would need a total left hip replacement. An MRI was ordered on both hips to ensure the right was not also compromised and a follow-up appointment scheduled on 7/22.
On July 22nd Her specialist informed her right hip is also collapsing and that she will need a double hip replacement surgery. The lesions cover the majority of both joints and cannot be saved. At this point, she requires crutches or a walker to get around and on the worst days, she’s stuck at home. The good news is, hip replacement surgery is pretty successful these days and she is very confident in her doctor. While her job is being very understanding, she still just started in May. She has only a few days of PTO, does not qualify for FMLA and her short term disability benefit she elected (to pay her in the event of disability) does not kick in until December and considers this condition pre-existing. She will have to take time unpaid to ensure she gets her surgeries in August and needs to ensure she can cover her portion of the medical expenses as well as living expenses. Eddie is taking on as much of the financial support as he can, but they will still need some help. Anything you can give to help ease their mind of this temporary financial burden would be greatly appreciated not only by Tiffany and Eddie but also by close friends and family.
