Through the Windows: Documentary

Donation protected
My name is Katrina "Petey" Barma and my wife and I have been writing, directing, and producing a documentary film in San Francisco for the past three years. The film is the story of the intersection between the historic Twin Peaks Tavern, the first gay bar in the United States that had clear windows, and the men who have been going there for 46 years. In 1972, this was an extremely bold statement to make because being gay was still against the law and being seen in a gay bar could easily be the end of a career, family, etc. The film takes us on fun, brave, poignant and very important journey of much more than a bar and it's patrons. It shows how one place can shine the light on an entire community and bring change to the world. This film is beyond important to us personally, to the LGBTQ community, and to the world we live in today, that has seemingly forgotten how far we have yet to go when it comes to equality.

The film also points the camera at not only at the gay community but listens carefully to the stories and wisdom of a generation that no matter their beliefs, gender, sexual orientation, contributions to society or their economic status are often forgotten or pushed aside. The lessons to be gained, the joy to be received is beyond measure. My wife and I will forever be thankful to these men and this movie. With that said we have made this movie entirely through our own funds and through the amazing volunteer work of editors, camera men and women, sound mixers, and composers (Jake Monaco has written an original score for the film) but as we near the finish we have run into unexpected, naively perhaps, expenses.

The main expenses that we will be using funds for is the use of historical footage (oddball films)$7,000,  hiring musicians and recording the score $10,000, and distribution of the film $3,000.  We are already immeasurably grateful for the talented crew that has believed in our film and given their time and talent, and that gratitude goes without saying to anyone who believes in this project enough to give even a little or share our campaign. Films like this benefit everyone. Just like opening the windows of Twin Peaks Tavern in the Castro neighborhood of San Francisco, the film sheds light on a story never told before from a perspective to long ignored. If only everyone reading this could see the joy these men have received from having the opportunity to tell their story. They are important, their story deserves to be seen and heard by more than me and Bret.

Your support means the completion of a film that in its own simple way may shape, and change how many people still see the gay community and have a better understanding of how so very similar we all are. You already have my thanks and gratitude just for reading our story, about our project, "Through the Windows", a light on history.

We are  grateful.
