If you don’t know me, my name’s Grace, I’m 20 years old and today I’ve decided to take the leap and share my story.
I was diagnosed with Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML) in March of 2015. Ever since I was diagnosed and experienced the trials and tribulations of leukemia, I’ve wanted to give back to the people who gave me my life back.
That’s why I’m starting a fundraiser today for which half the proceeds will go to Pediatric Oncology in the Janeway Children’s Hospital in St. John’s, and the other half will go to cancer research.
My goal is $5,000 because I want to donate $1,000 for every year that I’ve lived with CML.
There have been countless people who have provided me with the best possible care on my journey with leukemia, including my team of oncologists, nurses and many other staff members. When I think of all these beautiful, kind people who have supported me for so long and given me so much, I want to show them how much I appreciate them and the work they do.
The cytotoxic drug some called a miracle drug for its phenomenal success rate; Gleevec, was approved by the FDA in 2001. Before Gleevec, only 30% of patients with CML survived for even five years after being diagnosed. With Gleevec, that number rose to at least 80%.
This is why cancer research is so important.
Because someone diagnosed with cancer today may be able to be treated with a breakthrough drug in a day, a month, or a year. The next cure is right around the corner.
I’d really appreciate it if you read my story below and please donate as well as share with your friends and family :)
