We are trying to raise money for Joe Eckard and his family during this difficult time.
Joe has been in the hospital since 8/14/19 fighting stage 3 throat cancer (Squamous cell carcinoma). His oncologist began an aggressive chemotherapy regimen shortly after admitting him to the hospital due to the size and location of the cancer in his airway. This was meant to prevent Joe’s airway from becoming more obstructed than it already was. Since this treatment, however, Joe has developed several life-changing complications. He has neutropenic enterocolitis (an infection in his colon caused by the chemo decreasing the body's ability to fight infection from the bacteria already in the colon). This condition alone is and can be life-threatening and has caused a lot of pain. He has also developed congestive heart failure and is now requiring high flow oxygen to breathe comfortably and to keep his blood oxygen levels stable. He also requires tube feeding via a surgically placed PEG tube because he cannot tolerate eating and drinking enough to keep him hydrated and nourished. Joe is in a lot of pain right now and can’t even do the simple things we do daily like talk, walk, eat, drink, shower, watch TV, or spend time with his wife and new baby Cooper. He spends his days laying in bed with his eyes closed because light hurts his eyes. He is trying so hard to fight but these complications make the road to recovery seem longer and more difficult than it should be. Emily, Joe’s wife, visits the hospital every day with their nine-month-old son doing her best to stand by her husband and best friend during this trying time. They are both out of work right now and neither of them have disability insurance. They have a long road ahead of them and they could really use all the help we can offer to take the worry of paying bills and buying necessities off of their minds. I’m asking for all of us to come together and offer this family our love and support during this fight against cancer. Let’s help get this fun-loving dad back to his family.
