Three Peaks For Athan
Donation protected
Athan Tsouknidas is a Welsh/Greek 8-year-old boy who, like most boys his age, is a huge Minecraft fan! He has two younger sisters that he adores and does his best not to wind up too much for Mum and Dad. Athan has lived with Autism, which despite bringing on obsessive tendencies means he can, and will, quiz people on their washing machines despite already knowing the answers.
At the age of 6, Athan was also diagnosed with the terminal illness of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). This is a rare disorder, affecting around 1 in 3500 children, usually boys in early childhood. DMD will progress through the body by weakening the muscles and is highly progressive. At first, this will affect Athan's arms and legs, but will eventually develop to his lungs and heart.
Athan is already beginning to rely on his wheelchair more and more, becoming aware of his condition and differences from other children, and asking Mum and Dad some really difficult questions. Despite this, Athan attends a mainstream school in Cardiff where he has a fantastic support team. He approaches each challenge with strength and determination, remaining a happy and positive boy and making his Mum and Dad incredibly proud.
We are setting up this page to raise some money for Athan and his family in the hope that we can send them to Disneyland Paris. To achieve this Athan's Dad, Theo, and a group of friends will be attempting the Welsh Three Peak Challenge. The aim is to climb Snowdon, Cadair Idris and Pen-Y-Fan all within 24 hours. Hopefully, we can raise enough to give them memories to last forever, and anything left over will be donated to Muscular Dystrophy UK.
