As a twenty-something going through similar quarter-life crisis issues like Ingrid and Milly, I love creating stories that bring comfort to those also feeling lost. I love watching flawed characters try to improve their lives and grow, maybe making stupid decisions on the way. We’re all trying to be better people, but I think that fear of growing up can make us selfish, as we fear losing our identity as we age. If two films came together in holy matrimony and the result was Threads, those two films would be My Best Friend’s Wedding (1997) and Frances Ha (2012).
Threads came from a personal experience I had when I was younger. One of my close friends at the time confessed to me but I was unsure of my sexual orientation at that time. Only now did
I realise I did reciprocate those feelings but I was too scared to face the fact that I liked women and men. I struggle with, even to this day, feeling like I’m part of the queer community. There’s been more of a conversation about Bisexuality and how that fits into the queer community as a lot of people who identify as Bi are questioned if they’re just “experimenting” or just “going through a phase”. I’ve been asked questions like “Are you sure you’re bi?” in the past and I hate it’s something we have to prove to others.

I’m grateful I get to create more stories featuring and starring queer women and the ability to make films that bring queer identity and complicated romantic relationships to the screen. I love
watching queer cinema, some of my favourite films that I’ve taken inspiration from are Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019), But I’m A Cheerleader (1999) and Anaïs in Love (2021). Threads’s narrative has transformed over the years of writing the script, but it has always remained personal to me. This is a story about long-lost love, fear of adulthood and regret. I hope audiences enjoy Threads just as much as I enjoyed writing it.

When presented with the Threads project, I was invested in the dynamics between relationships and societal pressures. Often, people emerging into adulthood feel pressured to follow societal norms. This pressure can seep into their lives and relationships, leading them to contemplate their feelings and what society deems right. Threads explores how relationships are affected by societal pressures and how decisions driven by these pressures can impact lives. My hope as a producer is that viewers of Threads will reflect on the effects societal pressures can have on people, their decisions and their lives.
