Thousand Oaks Chess Club Online Support
Donation protected
Hello, my name is Larry Smith. I am a member of the Thousand Oaks Chess Club (TOCC). This club has been very capably operated for nearly 10 years by Cindy and Nick Garcia. They have done a great service in providing a welcoming place to play chess in Thousand Oaks, California, for players of all ages.
However, the 2020 pandemic has shutdown the onsite club. In the meantime, Nick has been doing a great job of running the online version of the TOCC. He has single-handedly organized several club tournaments a week, Vote Chess games, and matches against other clubs. He has continued to reach out to all of the club's members to let them know that the TOCC is still alive and well, giving everyone a fun place where we can still congregate with friends and play our favorite game.
The catch is that Nick is making absolutely no money for these efforts. When the club meets onsite at the Goebel Senior Center, some money is made via the collection of tournament entry fees. Most of this money is used to cover the cost of renting the rooms we play in, but quite naturally some of the money compensates Nick for all the time he puts in directing tournaments, carrying the equipment back and forth from home, etc. Let's not forget that Nick loves to play chess as well, but when he directs these tournaments he has to forego playing in order to focus on making sure the events go smoothly.
It's very simple: Nick continues to provide us with a great online environment and incentive for playing chess among friends, and he deserves some financial compensation for doing so. Please tell your friends from the club about this GoFundMe page, and let's do the right thing. If you have enjoyed participating in any of the TOCC tournaments or events, then please contribute a few dollars. Also, please tell other members of club, especially the parents of some of our younger players, because I don't have any simple way to contact them.
Let's also remember that the onsite TOCC shutdown will last at least until January 2021, and possibly longer than that. If we want Nick to keep our TOCC chess.com portal alive and well, sending some money his way will be most appreciated!
