Carolie Sly Teaching Refugees Abroad
Spende geschützt
My life mission is to ensure that refugees of all ages can continue learning, even when forced to flee their homelands. Since 2016 I have traveled to Greece four times to teach refugees from Afghanistan, Syria, and other countries, who are living in camps under terrible conditions. During COVID-19, I–and other volunteer tutors with Refugee Education and Learning–have continued weekly lessons refugees halfway around the world via Zoom. Now that the Taliban prohibits girls from attending school after sixth grade, we are seeing an uptick in the need for tutoring and we are expanding our services to Afghani women and girls.
I am ready to return to Greece to teach and then, if circumstances are safe enough, I will go to Eastern Europe to identify ways to help refugees stranded there. I anticipate that this trip will take about six weeks and I am asking friends and family to help with expenses for travel, lodging, and teaching materials. None of the costs are covered by any other source, other than my teacher retirement income. If you share my belief that everyone has a right to learn, regardless of their life circumstances, please consider supporting my work while I am still spunky enough to go–at 72 years old!
With gratitude, Carolie Sly
