Hi everyone,
Thank you for taking the time to visit Thor’s page. Unfortunately, my family and I very recently received some devastating news: my sweet 5-year-old dog, Thor, has been diagnosed with osteosarcoma, the most common primary bone cancer in dogs.
This came as a complete blindside to us. Just a few months ago, he was a happy, healthy dog. One day, he missed a jump (as goofy Labradors usually do) and hurt himself. At the time, we didn’t think much of it aside from him having a bit of pain. It started with a limp that progressively got worse. Our veterinarian initially suspected a pulled muscle and prescribed pain medication, asking us to come back if things didn’t improve. When his limp did not improve, Thor underwent further examination including x-rays, a CT scan, and other diagnostic tests, which confirmed our worst fears: a primary bone tumor, osteosarcoma. This tumor is aggressively eating away his scapula.
With this news, we also learned that this is a fight my sweet boy will eventually lose. The gold-standard treatment for his diagnosis is leg amputation combined with chemotherapy. Even with this treatment, the median survival time is only about one year. For those who have pets, you know every day is a gift; their time with us is always too short. But now, every single second I get to spend with Thor feels even more precious than ever.
For those of you who have met Thor, I’m sure he loved you even more than you loved him. He is a people-person through and through. Writing this has been the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do, but Thor is still as joyful as ever, and he is thankful to everyone who even stops to say a simple hello.
I started this GoFundMe to help cover the costs of his chemotherapy, amputation, medication, and eventually a prosthetic leg, so he can live his remaining time with us as comfortably and normally as possible. As of right now, we have been given only initial estimates of what treatment will cost; the down payments alone will total no less than ~$6,000. Any amount helps us give Thor the best chance at more happy days filled with love, play, and most importantly to him, lots of treats.
Thank you for hearing our story.
