Thor's Emergency Surgery and Healing Journey

Several people have seen our Facebook posts about Thor's surgery and have asked us to set up a Go Fund Me so they can help. We are humbled by your big hearts and generosity. So, here it goes...

Despite our best efforts, Thor ate part of a stuffed animal. We don't have any of them in the part of the house that the big boys are in, but somehow, he found one. He is like "Where's Waldo" in terms of finding things. We had no idea he had eaten part of it (he left no evidence). But, we could tell something was seriously wrong with him so we took him to South Metro Animal Emergency Care in Apple Valley on Saturday, November 22nd around noon. They did x-rays, an ultrasound, and bloodwork and confirmed that Thor had a blockage, so they gave him fluids and medication and did the surgery to remove it Saturday night.

Thor had to stay in the hospital two nights so that they could reduce the fluid that had built up in his stomach, determine what mixture of treatments and medications would work best for him, and ensure his stomach was working again. We picked Thor up early Monday morning. He was so out of it when we picked him up, but he was still so thrilled to see us - especially his Daddy! We have been giving him lots of love, keeping an eye on his incision, giving him medications day and night, and providing him with water and 4 small meals daily of boiled chicken and rice. He is resting and taking it easy - which he will be doing for the next few weeks while he heals. This afternoon, we will be taking him to our awesome regular vet (Total Pet Wellness) for a post op check. Post surgery complications are most likely to happen 3-5 days after surgery so we are continuing to pray for no complications and complete healing for sweet Thor.

As many of you know, this has been an especially rough year for us in terms of medical and veterinary expenses.
  • Gem, our sweet blue merle sheltie, crossed the rainbow bridge.
  • John had three extensive back surgeries and overcame a persistent infection.
  • At the same time John was in the hospital, my mom contracted a life-threatening case of pneumonia and was admitted to another hospital.
  • I moved my mom from assisted living to memory care after her hospitalization and transitional care.
  • Chief, one of our beloved golden retrievers, crossed the rainbow bridge.
  • Thor underwent emergency exploratory surgery at the Animal Emergency Referral Center in Oakdale in the fall for a blockage. They didn't find a blockage but determined that he had a bad case of pancreatitis (among other things).
  • And now, Thor actually had a blockage that was removed by the emergency vet ($8,209.72)

These extra expenses have taken a toll on us. We really appreciate all of the prayers, positive thoughts, and support that you have provided to us this year. We had prayed to God about finding the financial resources to help pay for this latest surgery and you have answered our prayers by asking to help. We can't thank you enough for your love and support. We love you all so much.
