Thornhill Mining Memorial was started many years ago by Thornhill miner Herbert Wood to remember the Miners who lost their lives in the Thornhill mining disaster of 1893. The Thornhill Colliery Disaster occurred at midday on the 4th July 1893. During the disaster 139 men and boys died, of all the workers in the mine, only nine survived.
Sadly, after campaigning for many years Herbert has since passed away. The years of discussions regarding the location and working with and alongside other groups who have also campaigned for a Memorial as close to the site as possible has now been realised. We have planning permission and a Memorial license to install the Thornhill Mining Memorial Wheel in Rectory Park.
But, in order to pay for the construction work and installation of the Wheel we will need your help. Any donation large or small goes towards leaving a lasting legacy to remember all the men, women and children who sadly lost their lives down the pits in Thornhill, and this will become an all user place of reflection to honour their memories.
As soon as sufficient funds have been raised work will commence on the project. Thank you for your donations.
