Spinal infection, paraplegia, failed surgery
Donation protected
Hi, my name is Joel. Due to a hit and run accident with a tractor trailer and spinal kyphosis, I had a thoracic posterior and anterior rib graph spinal fusion from T-4 to T-11 in 1995. I was only 37, and loved to travel. The surgery was a failure and left me partially paraplegic. I was never able to walk again. Four years after the surgery I developed a secondary condition called Syringomyelia which caused total paraplegia and constant pain.
I was able to live alone until May 2020 even though I was wheelchair bound. After losing strength in my arm and shoulder and becoming intensely ill in 2020, I was hospitalized and diagnosed with a severe spinal infection and a complete hardware failure in my spinal fusion. I spent almost a year at Mission Hospital. Four screws began protruding out of my back. Trigger warning: I have included a picture in updates below. I was given four different high powered IV antibiotics twice a day for ten months which could not cure the infection and instead caused me to lose 80% of my hearing. The orthopedic and neurological surgeons in this area would not consider surgery due to the complexity of my condition and the spinal infection.
- I am humbly requesting funds to pay for my continued home medical care which requires bandaging my spine and a stage 5 pressure wound, bathing, meal preparation, transfers and all daily needs. I have a nurse who comes once a week and rotating CNA’s who come twice daily. My medical condition requires medical assistance seven days a week. Unfortunately I am now at a financial point where I cannot afford care and I am also in fear of losing my home. My hope is to find a qualified surgeon who can rebuild my spine and help eradicate the deep infection. Without surgery I was told that I would inevitably develop fatal sepsis. I have come close several times. I am only 65 and I would do anything to live longer. Any amount would be helpful and greatly appreciated. Thank you.
